Raiders hire Terrell Williams to coach the defensive line

The Raiders defensive staff has slowly but surely been filling out since they hired their defensive coordinator last week. That new coach is Terrell Williams who will take over as the team’s new defensive line coach according to a report. And he is another coach with links to Head Coach Dennis Allen.

Williams has been the defensive line coach at Texas A&M the past two seasons. Texas A&M is Dennis Allen’s alma mater as well as where he began his coaching career.

Williams is not without accomplishments, however. His specialty is stopping the run which he has done with some success since joining the Aggie coaching staff two seasons ago. In his first season, the A&M run defense rose from being ranked 90 in the nation to 30 and rose again last season to 12 in the nation, allowing just 101.9 yards a game to their opponents.

That solid run defense helped lead the Aggies to two straight bowl games, winning the Meineke Car Care Bowl last season and a share of their first Big 12 South division crown in more than a decade and a berth in the Cotton Bowl.

Prior to his time at Texas A&M, Williams was the Dline coach at Purdue for four seasons. During his time there, he helped usher three straight years of outstanding Purdue defensive linemen into the NFL. Dallas Cowboy defensive lineman Anthony Spencer was the first. Spencer led the NCAA in tackles for loss and was a first-team All-American before becoming a first-round pick of the Cowboys in 2007. Others include defensive end Cliff Avril who was a third-round selection of the Detroit Lions in 2008 and Alex Magee who was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round of the 2009 NFL draft.

Williams becomes the latest college hire by the Raiders who are still a few coaches away from filling out their entire staff. Stay up to date by checking in with the Raiders’ coaching staff live blog.
