Report: Raiders “expected to trade” for QB Matt Schaub

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Raiders are expected to trade the Houston Texans a late round 2014 draft pick in exchange for QB Matt Schaub.

Schaub, who has been with the Texans since 2007 when he was acquired by Houston in a trade with Atlanta, had a down year last season and eventually lost his starting job. However, he brings solid starting experience and ability to the Raiders, who have struggled to find a consistent QB since Rich Gannon retired.

Schaub owns all of the Texans passing records, the Texans having been an expansion team in 2002.

This move makes the Raiders likely to eventually move on from QB Terrelle Pryor either by trade or outright release.

While having no inside information, I do not think this move precludes the Raiders drafting a QB in the first round. GM Reggie McKenzie has previously stated that he thinks it’s important to have a rookie QB sit for a year to learn.

He’s also shown that he is willing to draft players high that have not reached their full potential but project well into the future. Last year’s draft was a prime example of this, when McKenzie took CB DJ Hayden, who hadn’t played football for almost a year due to a major injury, in the early first round and OT Menelik Watson, who had only played football for a few years, early in the second round last year.
