BREAKING NEWS: Capellan dealt to Detroit

Tom Haudricourt reported Sunday morning that much maligned middle reliever José Capellan was dealt to the Detroit Tigers for left-handed starting prospect Chris Cody. The move clears way for the return of Chris Capuano back to the 25-man roster, thus preventing the need to send Yovani Gallardo back down to Nashville. Capellan was acquired from the Braves back in ’05 in the trade for Danny Kolb. Haudricourt wrote for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel at http://www.jsonline.com:

Cody, 23, an eighth-round draft pick in 2006 out of Manhattan College, pitched most of this season for Detroit’s low Class A West Michigan affiliate, going 5-5 with a 1.77 ERA in 14 starts. In 91 1/3 innings, he allowed only 70 hits and 15 walks while striking out 92 hitters. Cody recently had been promoted to high Class A Lakeland, where he was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA. He was assigned to the Brewers’ high Class A Brevard County affiliate.

My take: I like Capellan, and hate to see him go, but he just didn’t live up to the potential here that everyone thought he would. Hopefully, a change in scenery will help him…and I like the Tigers, too, so win-win for me. Moving pitchers was imminent, as the Crew still has Chris Oxspring and Manny Parra starting in Nashville and on track for starting in the bigs in ’08, as well as Zach Jackson and Tim Dillard starting in Nashville and contenders for reliever roles next year…not to mention Greg Aquino and Joe Thatcher already relieving in Nashville and due a shot at the bigs as relievers in ’08.
