Brewers Sign Capuano, Halama to Minor League Deals

Adam McCalvy’s been a busy guy today, tracking down the latest news on the Brewers’ pursuit for pitching.

In a move that I expected to happen, the Brewers are bringing back Chris Capuano on a minor league contract as he continues his attempt to make it back to the majors. Capuano hasn’t pitched in the majors in two years, but has at least started pitching again. As McCalvy notes, the left hander threw for the Brewers’ two rookie league teams at the end of the 2009 season, and will have an invitation to big league spring training. Personally, I’ve always been a fan of Capuano — my favorite game I’ve ever been to involved Cappy outdueling CC Sabathia and the Indians in 2006, when he struck out 12 in 7 innings. Here’s to hoping he can complete the comeback and help the Brewers at some point in 2010.

In another minor league deal, the Brewers also added 37-year old lefty John Halama today. In the past few days, rumors started going around that the Brewers were one of the teams interested in the former big leaguer, who spent last season in the Independent League. Like Capuano, Halama has been out of the big leagues for awhile — he hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2006.

It doesn’t seem likely that either guy will be a big contributor for the 2010 Brewers, but at least they provide depth — something the club struggled with last season, and resulted in seeing starts from guys like Mike Burns. At the very least, I’d prefer to see Halama make starts instead of Burns in 2010 if everything blows up and the pitching is a disaster yet again. Hopefully, it doesn’t get to that point, and the Brewers will be able to find some big league arms in the coming weeks.

One guy the Brewers reportedly have their eye on (and may benefit greatly from a return to the NL) is Carl Pavano. No surprise, but McCalvy has that story as well at Brew Beat. Pavano would be the latest on a long list of “not great, but at least it’s something” pitchers the Brewers have been linked to so far this season.
