Linebrink battered as Brews lose to Cubs, 5-3

Famous Cubs’ fan Bill Murray made the phrase, “It just doesn’t matter!” famous…both on SNL and in the film, “Meatballs.” Perhaps the Brewers and their fans should start adopting that mantra…for both the Brewers dropping below .500 and also for dropping into 3rd place in the NL Central…plus the likelihood that whichever team wins the NL Central will probably get ousted in the first round of the playoffs anyway.
Jeff Suppan’s 3-1 lead Tuesday night was squandered by Scott Linebrink, as the Cubs plated 4 in the 7th, to take game one of the series, 5-3. The Cubs’ lead increases to 2½ games, thus assuring the Northsiders of remaining in the lead in the NL Central, even if the Brewers somehow manage to win the remaining two games.
J.J. Hardy was the only Brewers to have a multi-hit game, going 3-for-4, and scoring two of the runs.
Ben Sheets is slated to face Cubs’ ace Carlos Zambrano Wednesday night…if Claudio Vargas wasn’t hurt (I believe Wednesday would have been his spot in the rotation), the Ned Yost would have had the option of holding Sheets back until Thursday, so as to not send his best against the Cubs’ best, improving his chance of getting at least one win. But, at this point, the Brewers probably need to go for broke and try to get wins on both nights.
Only two more days until we get Carlos Villanueva, Greg Aquino, and Tony Gwynn, Jr. in Milwaukee…unless someone decides that they all deserve a chance to play for the AAA title.
