His lead may be challenged, but it likely won’t be broken. Martin Truex Jr is way out ahead of the pack, but it hasn’t slowed the battle below him in the standings. This past weekend, thanks to a win at Bristol, teammate Kyle Busch has unseated Kyle Larson to take over second place in the stack by just five-points. Something is in the water over at Toyota with the team’s updated Camry having a huge impact on the season.
Busch completed the clean sweep of the week by winning the truck series, Xfinity and the Monster Energy race; of course, the most notable victory of the three coming on Sunday. He’s really now starting to take things up a notch, but will it be enough?
With only a few months of racing left, Truex Jr can’t be expected to finish in the 20’s, like he did this past weekend, every Sunday. Regardless of Kyle Busch’s momentum after the win at Bristol, however, Truex Jr is expected to maintain composure into the rest of the schedule, with NASCAR sportsbooks in Vegas keeping his line consistent heading into next weekend and beyond.
Truex now leads Busch by 101-points, 15-playoff points, two wins, one top five and two top 10’s. The Furniture Row car cannot be stopped and although he’s had pretty steady competition from Busch, Larson, Harvick and Keselowski; Truex is walking into the home stretch with history on his side.
Just one year ago, he entered the September stretch of his season and took wins at both the Bojangles’ Southern 500 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 – now known as ‘Tale of the Turtles 400’ – and he wasn’t done there. He also took the 2016 Citizen Soldier 400 – now goes by the name of the ‘Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Race at Dover’ – to begin October.
He’d also added a top 5 and a top ten finish following those victories in November and December. If he continues this pace, he’ll likely be in line for his first ever Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. His lead at this very moment could be enough to carry him into the fall and playoffs with stranglehold on the top spot.
If he can keep his miraculous run intact and find ways to continue winning races, stages, top five’s or 10’s, he could cap off what has been nothing short of a magical season for the Furniture Row team.
