A Split Of Oil

The early season push to get back to the .500 mark will have to wait another game for the Edmonton Oil Kings thanks to a home weekend split with the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Everett Silvertips.

On Friday night, the Jr Oil would fall 7-3 to the Brandon Wheat Kings in a game that saw them playing from behind for all of this one.

Even though the Oil Kings had the early edge in shots in this one scoring wise it would be all Brandon in the first as Ty Lewis, Linden McCorrister and Kale Clauge would get on the score sheet as Thompson stood on his head at the other end for the Wheat Kings at the end of the frame.

Brandon would make it a 4-0 game early in the 2nd but before they could blow this open Brett Kemp would get that goal back and Oil Kings vet Matt Robertson would put home his 4th of the season less than three minutes later as the final six minutes of the third would be nothing but a shooting gallery on Thompson and as the teams went to the dressing rooms all of the momentum was on Edmonton’s side in a 4-2 game.

Any hope of a true comeback would be dashed early in the third though as Stelio Mattheos would beat Travis Child to make it a 5-2 Wheat Kings game Trey Fix-Wolansky would get one back midway through the frame but things would be iced with two late goals from Clauge to complete the hat trick and the 7-3 victory.

An effort like this didn’t sit well with Oil Kings head coach Steve Hamilton as he let it be known that if you don’t give a strong enough effort all game you’ll have no chance at digging yourself out of a deep hole.

“Seven goals against, I mean and they were all prime time right in the house, right in the heart of the defense, that’s a choice as our guys know. That’s a choice if were not willing to be gritty, defend hard then your not going to outscore your mistakes when you spot them a lead like that. We were just chasing the game, decent second period but we weren’t able to really get traction”.

Sunday would bode much better for the Oil Kings in the form of a 5-1 win in the Silvertips first trip to Rogers Place as Edmonton would open things up with their own first period three goal barrage from Conner McDonald, Trey Fix-Wolansky and Davis Koch. Fix-Wolansky and Brett Kemp would finish off the scoring in this one in a game that had fire power for the home side on 5 on 5 but funny enough would see them go 1-7 on the powerplay.

Next up, the Oil Kings hit the road for their next four tilts and will return to Rogers Place to take on the Victoria Royals on October 18th.
