New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is a funny guy.
Belichick gave his usual Friday interview and in the process dropped a gem of a quote, suggesting he can’t tell the difference between two of his quarterbacks, Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo.
WEEI.com’s Mike Petraglia provided the note:
“Certainly we have a good quarterback in Jimmy and Jimmy can go out there and run everything that Tom can run,” Belichick said. “We’ve seen that, so I’m not saying that he’s not capable or qualified to do it. He is, and he does a great job of it and when we put Jimmy in there it’s really seamless. Unless you were actually looking at the position, if you just could block out that position and say which guy was in there at quarterback, I don’t know if you would know a lot of times.”
Belichick likes to mess with the media, so this little over-the-top comment to finish an otherwise fine statement doesn’t mean he’s going to change it up at quarterback or anything. He’s more speaking to his faith in the system, as he should.
Still, it’s funny to think about what this means long term. Belichick knows what he is doing and this might be one way for him to take a stab at boosting Garoppolo’s trade value. For those who want to go to the other extreme, everyone knows what just happened with Jamie Collins.
Chalk this up to Belichick laying the foundation for a trade in case the team can’t agree to a deal with Garoppolo down the road. It’s a note to keep in mind.
