Philadelphia 76ers big man Nerlens Noel sat out all of the 2013-14 season as he was recovering from an ACL injury that he suffered at Kentucky. Noel missed his entire rookie season and will now be a rookie this upcoming season.
If the summer league was any indication of how good Noel can be then he could be Rookie of the Year. Unlike last year’s rookie class, this year’s class is much stronger and Noel has competition such as Jabari Parker of the Milwaukee Bucks and Andrew Wiggins of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
When Wiggins was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, his odds of winning Rookie of the Year were 6/1 according to Bovada. That’s because Wiggins would be playing with the likes of Kyrie Irving and a guy named LeBron James. Wiggins would be playing in James’ shadow but since he is now in Minnesota his odds have improve to 4/1. Parker comes in at first with 3/1 odds. With him playing Milwaukee there isn’t much help there except Giannis Antetokounmpo so expect Parker to shoulder a lot of the scoring.
Finally, you have Nerlens Noel. He will benefit from having Michael Carter-Williams playing point guard and putting him in good positions to succeed.
Noel will have a tall task to become the Rookie of the Year because he has to go up against two wing players in Parker and Wiggins, who will have more scoring and playmaking opportunities. But do not doubt Noel because he might just as well surprise us just like he did in summer league.
