Titans close 2008 draft by selecting Washburn CB Cary Williams in 7th round

The Titans chose Washburn CB Cary Williams with their 7th round pick, 229th overall.
Washburn is a 6’1″, 185 pound CB who’s run a 4.43 40 yard dash and was a Division II All-America in 2007 after finishing with 7 interceptions. He also provides return skills, with a 23.4 yard average and 2 TDs his senior year.
Williams apparently had a great performance at the Kansas Pro Day; a good thing, as only the Chiefs bothered to attend Washburn University‘s. He also spent some time at receiver, though that was probably because he’s a good player and Washburn didn’t have elite talent. Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News picked him as his sleeper in his CB breakdown.
A big red flag on Williams, and a reason he’s maybe an uncharacteristic pick: he started his career at Fordham, but got into a fight with coaches and got kicked off the team, which is how he ended up at Washburn. If you’re looking for a reason for optimism, Marques Colston had the same problem at Hofstra, though he didn’t get kick off the team. The NFLDraftScout profile linked above notes: “He sort of reminds me of a terrier, with his emotional level, as he is quickly agitated and does not take well to hard coaching.” Further, “His lack of strength is the result of his disdain for the weight room.” Good luck to the Titans’ coaching staff with this guy, as they may need it. Well, it’s a 7th round pick.
