Titans re-sign Dave Ball, Jacob Ford, Ahmard Hall

The Tennessee Titans today helped fill out the roster by re-signing three of their own players, defensive ends Dave Ball and Jacob Ford, and fullback Ahmard Hall.  All three players were reportedly signed to one-year deals.

Ball was the Titans free agent I thought had the best chance and made the most sense of returning to the team.  He had a career high 11 starts and 7.0 sacks in 2010.  He played both defensive end and defensive tackle, but primarily defensive end.  I’d expect him to play exclusively defensive end.  I’d guess he’s probably the third man in the defensive end rotation, behind Derrick Morgan and Jason Jones.

I’m honestly a little surprised the Titans re-signed Jacob Ford.  I thought he had kind of a mediocre 2010, with only 3.0 sacks after 7.0 and 5.5 his first two healthy seasons despite starting 5 games, and that made me think even more than I did before he’s most useful as an edge rusher in obvious passing situations.  With Morgan, Jones, and Ball in the fold, I wonder what kind of shape that puts William Hayes in.

With Hall’s re-signing, the Titans will manage to bring back at least one one of their four captains from last seasons, as Vince Young and Stephen Tulloch have departed for greener pastures and Donnie Nickey seems unlikely to return.  Hall is what he is, a useful fullback who’s only an occasional option in the offense and plays situationally.  Personally, I would’ve preferred a younger player than the 31-year-old Hall and one who might’ve ended up with more than 20 touches, but Hall’s veteran presence should help a locker room that doesn’t have much time to cope with a decent amount of offseason upheaval.

With these three signings, the Titans’ roster stands at 87 players.  GM Mike Reinfeldt indicated on Friday he’d like to add a safety, so look for that to be the position that fills one of the three remaining roster spots.

What do you think of these signings?  Happy to see familiar faces back on the team, or disappointed to see more of the same faces from last year’s disappointment?
