Titans Sign Kelly Herndon

What looked like a position of weakness several months ago has been solidified by several offseason moves to bolster the secondary.
In the most recent move, the Titans have signed free agent cornerback Kelly Herndon to a three-year contract, which should be very good news for all Titans fans.
Herndon has 259 career tackles, 56 passes defensed, nine interceptions and eight forced fumbles in three years with the Broncos and two years with the Seahawks, in 73 NFL games.
Credit GM Mike Reinfeldt and Pro Personnel Director Lake Dawson, who each knew Herndon well as members of the Seahawks organization. Herndon’s agent, Peter Schaffer, said the pair were factors in Herndon’s decision.

“Lake really gave him the lay of the land, that this was a situation where Kelly will be able to continue to fulfill all his professional aspirations.”

Tennessee will now have three established veteran corners in Herndon, Reynaldo Hill, and Nick Harper, to compete for two starting spots with first-round draft pick Michael Griffin.
I like several things about this signing. Having another veteran corner with starting experience is one. Having some good competition at the position is another. And having Reinfeldt’s and Dawson’s nod of approval, with their close knowledge of Herndon, also scores points in his favor.
People who thought the sky was falling with the cornerback situation should now feel better.
I never felt quite that strongly about the corner spots, though I do about defensive end. The Titans need someone on the right side who can pressure the quarterback from the edge and also hold it against the run. Left DE Kyle Vanden Bosch has been working some on the right side this offseason, but moving him only switches the deficiency to the other side.
The Titans are rumored to be in the mix for Bears DE Alex Brown and I hope they will be able to consummate that deal as well.
