Titans take ILB Avery Williamson in 5th round

With their fifth-round pick, 151st overall, in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans selected Kentucky linebacker Avery Williamson.

Williamson was a highly productive tackling machine for the Wildcats, totaling 237 tackles between 2012 and 2013. He has decent size at 6’1, 246 pounds, and projects best as a run-stopper. He was one of the players that the Titans brought in for a pre-draft visit, so he was one of the players I watched. I saw a guy who was a run-stopper, as promised, but I did not see a real take-on player to fill the true strong inside linebacker spot (if there will be such a thing). I also wondered a lot about his work in pass coverage. Can he do more than play underneath zones? Between Wesley Woodyard, Zach Brown, Moise Fokou, Zaviar Gooden, and Colin McCarthy, he won’t need to. The presence of those players also means he’ll be facing a lot of competition for a role. With guys like Woodyard and Danny Trevathan, Kentucky has produced some linebackers who have vastly exceeded their expected NFL production levels, so hopefully Williamson fits the same mold.

As for me, I was continuing my watch for a wide receiver here (Brandon Coleman has to come off the board sooner or later, right?), but I’m perfectly fine with Williamson.
