Video: Umpire slips and nearly does a split while making dramatic call

Third base umpire Gary Cederstrom tried so hard to make the correct call that even an attempt to do a split could not help him regain balance when he took a spill in Friday night’s Giants-Royals game.

In the second inning of the interleague matchup, with runners on the corners, Giants 3B Joaquin Arias took a sizable lead at third base as SS Brandon Crawford swung through an offspeed pitch. Royals catcher Salvador Perez attempted to gun him down with a quick throw, and as Arias slid back toward the bag, Cederstrom got in position to make the call.

But the Kauffman Stadium grass didn’t cooperate, and the third base umpire slipped as he ruled Arias safe. He tried to do a split to regain his balance. It didn’t work out—and he took a spill.

It was a valiant effort, but this was the result.
Cederstrom had a laugh after it was all over.
