Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has done an amazing job mixing up coverages and disguising pressure for one of the league’s top units in the game today.
Sunday’s AFC Divisional Round game was just another example of that, where we saw the Broncos play a lot of zone to keep the Steelers out of the end zone, and it worked. The Broncos primarily used man coverage this season, but looking at the individual matchups and how great they are at tackling, they mixed it up by playing zone and the Steelers probably weren’t expecting it.
The Broncos gave up 396 total yards, but did not allow a touchdown after the first quarter of the game, and that was the difference.
Unfortunately for poor Wade, his unit couldn’t protect him during one particular moment in the game. After running out of bounds at the end of a play, Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant bumped into Phillips on the sideline and sent him flying.
It sure looked like Bryant could’ve tried to stop himself, but elected not to.
