St. Louis Rams LB Michael Sam stole the show at Wednesday’s ESPY Awards ceremony with a captivating acceptance speech.
Sam spoke after accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, and delivered a heartfelt speech that brought many to tears.
He opened by sharing a quote from Ashe:
“Start where you are, use what you have and do what you can.”
“Those have been very meaningful words to me,” Sam said. “And the way I see my responsibility at this moment is to stand up for everybody out there who wants nothing more than to be themselves openly.”
He also later said we should follow whatever talent or passion we have, whatever it may be.
Lastly, he touched on how he helped a friend’s sister come to terms with her homosexuality, as she was struggling after attempting to come out to her family. She was even considering suicide, but Sam talked her through the rough time.
“It’s amazing to think by just doing what we can, we can all touch, change and even save lives.”
Sam hit the nail on the head. By being proactive, and reaching out to others that are faced with similar issues that we’ve dealt with, we can improve the lives of everyone around us.
It was a thoughtful yet powerful speech. Sam can really light up a room when he speaks.
