Hunter Pence has been back playing at Citizens Bank Park during the most recent Giants-Phillies series, and he’s had to fight off boo birds after delivering some clutch hits. But that’s to be expected in the City of Brotherly Love.
And Wednesday night’s game featured a comical moment with Pence and the Phillies mascot. Just before the match-up was to begin, Phillie Phanatic attempted to heckle Pence while he was in the on-deck circle with silly dance moves, finger-pointing and some good old-fashioned smack talk. He even made fun of Pence’s socks, which is a low blow.
Some backstory: During Tuesday night’s game, Pablo Sandoval nearly made an exceptional sliding catch in foul territory. But he couldn’t come up with it, and ended up just taking a big spill instead.
So on Wednesday, right after heckling Pence, Phillie Phanatic trolled Sandoval and did a goofy rendition of the first baseman’s failed attempt.
“I’ve got it…I’ve got it…I’ve…missed it!”
So Pence decided to play back with a joke of his own. And when Phillie Phanatic attempted to do a few sit-ups—nearly passing out in the process—Pence decided to give the mascot CPR.
And at the end of the day, it was Pence who would have the last laugh. His two-out, bases-clearing double in the ninth inning drove in the first runs of the game and was key in the team’s 3-1 victory.
