Earlier today, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported that the NHL Winter Classic did a 2.4 in the overnight ratings, quite good and better than expected.
Well, it appears it did even better than that. NBC says the game garnered a 2.6/5 for its time period, the best ratings for a NHL regular season in more than ten years.
The Sports Media Watch says while the game did well as far as hockey is concerned, it still was slaughtered by the Capital One Bowl on ABC. Newsday’s Neil Best writes in his blog that the numbers would have been better had the Capital One Bowl not been on against it.
Chris Pursell of TV Week says Buffalo and Pittsburgh were the number one and two top rated markets for the game (naturally). I find it interesting that my home market of Providence, RI was tied for 5th with Las Vegas (?).
The great Adam Proteau of the Hockey News says despite some problems, the NHL Winter Classic can be deemed a success.
I’ll give you another entry coming up.
