The Buckeyes see action again tonight in the consolation match of the 2K Sports “Coaches vs. Cancer” Challenge. This time they face the #12 ranked California Golden Bears. Here’s what you need to know:

Who's ever seen a golden bear? We should steal their's, it must be worth millions!

Neither team in this game looked particularly good last night. California looked terrible last night against Syracuse – remember, this is the same Syracuse team that lost to Division 2 LeMoyne! – losing by double figures 95-73 in a game that probably wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Ohio State, on the other hand, managed to at least make the final score look respectable after spotting North Carolina a 19 point lead in the middle of the second half. Somehow (probably because UNC began to let up a bit) the Buckeyes managed to claw their way back in to the game and narrowed it to 2 with 10 seconds remaining. Unfortunately UNC drained their free-throws and put the end to the run.

This game will likely be a completely different story. Cal is already staggering due to significant injuries across their front court. First, Junior Forward Harper Kamp (6-8, 255) injured his knee last season preventing him from playing yet this season. Now, starting Senior Forward Theo Robertson (6-6, 225) has a stress fracture in his foot and won’t be playing for a long while. Robertson was a huge starter for the Bears, averaging 18 points and 4 rebounds per game on 34 minutes of playing. That sort of production won’t be easy to make up.

With the Robertson injury, Cal switched their offensive mindset running a 3 guard, 1 forward 1 center lineup. Cal’s larger backcourt is lead by Senior Guards Patrick Christopher (6-5, 215) and Jerome Randle (5-10, 160). Both players are averaging significant time on the floor with 34 minutes a piece. They are clearly the center pieces for the Bears team. Neither player is afraid to shoot it either, Randle averages 21.7 points per game while Christopher averages a more pedestrian 14. Christopher isn’t exactly lights out on the court (39.1% field, 22.2% three), but Randle is deadly with a 45.9% field coupled with a 50% from three (on 14 attempts to date). He’s also draining the vast majority of his freethrows (92.3%) meaning that he should not be a fouling target if the Bucks play a game like last night.

Also starting in the backcourt is previous 6 man Jorge Gutierrez (6-3, 185). The sophomore is more of a distrubtor than he is a shooter, and while he’s hit 67% of his three pointers he’s only taken 3. This makes him a bit of a wild card, but don’t expect him to suddenly explode on the scene.

Cal’s frontcourt has three players of note. The starters are Senior Forward Jamal Boykin (6-8, 230) and Junior Center Markhuri Sanders-Frison (6-8, 265). Both players play a good number of minutes (more than 20), but don’t put up too many points during the course of a game. Their role is as rebounders down low, and don’t expect a whole lot more. Before you get to thinking that they have a height issue the backup center, Sophomore Max Zhang (7-3, 225), has more than enough height to make up for it. However, he doesn’t play for long, so he won’t make a huge splash.

Here are your approximate starting lineups. Wednesday I said that Lauderdale would be starting for the Bucks, and I turned out to be horribly mistaken. Today I’ll claim Madsen is starting, and we’ll see what happens.
