The good news for the NFL continues to roll in regarding the most watched event in US TV history, Super Bowl XLIV on CBS. We know that Super Bowl XLIV broke the record of the series finale of M*A*S*H set back in 1983. We also know the most watched Super Bowl ad was a Doritos commercial. Now we get more viewing info broken down by the NFL.

MOST-WATCHED PLAYS IN SUPER BOWL XLIV
  • An average of 116.5 million people were watching when Saints’ CB Tracy Porter returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter
  • An average of 109 million viewers were watching when the Saints recovered an on-side kick to start second half

By comparison
An average of 111.6 million people were watching when Steelers WR Santonio Holmes made the game-winning TD catch in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLIII

An average of 108 million viewers were watching when Giants WR David Tyree made his dramatic 32-yard, third-down reception late in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII and 111 million people were watching when Giants WR Plaxico Burress made the game-winning touchdown catch in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII.

SUPER BOWL XLIV MOST-WATCHED AMONG WOMEN
Super Bowl XLIV was watched by an average of 41.9 million women – the most on record, surpassing the average audiences of 40.9 million (Feb. 23, 1994) and 38.6 million (Feb. 25, 1994) women who watched the 1994 Winter Olympic figure skating competition featuring Nancy Kerrigan. Super Bowl XLIV female viewership increased nine percent over the 38.3 million women who watched Super Bowl XLIII. 

SUPER BOWL XLIV MOST-WATCHED AMONG HISPANICS
Super Bowl XLIV is the most-watched English-language program and Sports Event ever among Hispanics averaging 8.28 million Hispanic viewers, up six percent from last year’s record (7.84 million Hispanic viewers for Super Bowl XLIII).

No matter how you slice it, Super Bowl XLIV was a true viewing event.
