Baseball is a funny game — you can go days without hitting a lick, and then bust out in a big way when it’s least expected. So far, the 2010 Brewers have been the perfect example of this feast-or-famine type of offense.
After a four-game famine which saw the Brewers score only 2 runs against the San Diego Padres, the Brewers scored a total of 9 runs in the second inning against the Dodgers Tuesday night, chasing starter Clayton Kershaw after 1.1 innings. Gregg Zaun finished the night a triple short of the cycle (and was hit by a pitch twice), Ryan Braun was a homer short of the cycle, and Prince Fielder hit his third home run of the season.
As far as the pitching went, Chris Narveson started the game on fire and didn’t stumble until the 5th inning, when he gave up two runs on a pair of sacrifice flies. He finished the night with 3 ER in 6 innings, which I’ll personally take every time from the 5th starter in the rotation. Claudio Vargas pitched a perfect 7th inning before Manny Parra gave the Dodgers a brief glimmer of hope in the 8th, surrendering a three-run bomb to James Loney.
After a severely disappointing series in San Diego, it was important to come out strong tonight, and the Brewers did what they had to do. The big inning early let them play loose the rest of the night, and hopefully that means good things are in store for the rest of the road trip. I just hope Tom Haudricourt doesn’t end up throwing this game out, too, the next time he wants to talk about how poorly the offense is playing.
