Brewers’ 25-man roster: Room for 4 more?

MLB: Brewers vs Nationals APR 18

Within the past 24 hours or so, the Brewers have added OF Jim Edmonds and SP Kameron Loe to the 25-man roster…resulting in the demotion and then the DFA of OF Adam Stern and also pitcher Marco Estrada returning to AAA Nashville.

These moves, however, still leave four more pending roster moves to add back guys still on the DL: OF Jody Gerut, SP Doug Davis, RP David Riske, and RP LaTroy Hawkins.  The Brewers are still sitting at 13 pitchers on the 25-man after having sent OF Adam Stern back to the minors and adding RP John Axford back on May 15…meaning that Gerut’s activation will likely cause a roster move involving another pitcher.

According to the Injury Updates on brewers.com, Riske is the most likely to be activated next, possibly within a week or so, followed by Hawkins around June 5, Gerut around June 6, with Doug Davis not likely to return until later in June.

Riske, a right-handed reliever that has appeared in 4 games/5 innings for Nashville and has yet to allow an earned run in AAA, would likely knock out another reliever.  Zach Braddock, a lefty, has struggled a bit of late, but is now expendable that Manny Parra, also a lefty, has returned to the bullpen.  Of course, Jeff Suppan and his deadweight contract are also on the chopping block.

It is hard to imagine the Brewers’ hanging onto LaTroy Hawkins and his 9.26 ERA, so he may just be sent to the minors for a very long rehab stint.

The dark horse in this merry-go-round is Dave Bush, whose ERA jumped a full point in May–Bushie had a somewhat respectable 4.60 ERA in 5 starts in April, but a 5.64 ERA in 5 starts in May.  Bush’s start Tuesday night in Miami, if rough, may open the door for Kameron Loe to get a start on Sunday versus the Cardinals…look for Loe, who was scheduled to start for the Sounds on Tuesday night and was called up four days earlier than necessary, to piggyback on Bush if Bush struggles early…setting the stage for a start on Sunday.
