Here’s a press release from the UConn Athletic Communications Department regarding the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team’s appearances on national television this season:
STORRS, Conn. – The two-time defending national champion University of Connecticut women’s basketball team is scheduled to appear on national television nine times during the 2010-11 regular season as part of this season’s BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Television Package, which was announced by the league today.
UConn is set to play one game on CBS, five contests on ESPN2, two on ESPNU and one on CBS College Sports. Additionally, the 2011 BIG EAST Tournament will be televised nationally on ESPNU or ESPN2.
Connecticut will make its 2010-11 national television debut against Baylor on Tuesday, November 16 as part of ESPN’s Tip-Off Marathon. That highly-anticipated matchup is set for 6 p.m. at the XL Center and the contest will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Baylor finished the 2009-10 season with a 27-10 overall record, including a 9-7 mark in the Big 12. The Lady Bears finished the season rated No. 15 in the ratings percentage index (RPI) and fell, 70-50, to UConn in the national semifinal in San Antonio.
This will represent the 22nd consecutive year that the Huskies will be televised nationally on one of ESPN’s family of networks.
A contest against Big Ten regular season champion Ohio State is UConn’s next nationally-televised game. Connecticut will face the Buckeyes on Sunday, December 19 as part of the fifth annual Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden. The contest is set for 2:30 p.m. and will be preceded by the Rutgers vs. Texas A&M game at 12 p.m. Both tilts will be televised on ESPNU. UConn also competed in the Maggie Dixon Classic on December 14, 2009, defeating Penn State, 77-63.
Ohio State finished 2009-10 with a 31-5 record, including a 15-3 mark in Big Ten action. The Buckeyes finished the season rated No. 9 in the RPI and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies will play their second game on ESPNU when they welcome Florida State to the XL Center on Tuesday, December 21. UConn beat the Seminoles by a 90-50 score in the Dayton Regional Final of last year’s NCAA Tournament. The `Noles went 29-6 last season and won a share of the ACC Regular Season Crown with a 12-2 mark. FSU finished the 2009-10 season rated No. 14 in the RPI and was ranked in the top-10 in both major polls.
UConn will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. for a showdown with Stanford, which is set to tip at 9 p.m. EST on Thursday, December 30. That contest will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Huskies downed the Cardinal by a 53-47 score in last year’s national championship contest in San Antonio. In fact, UConn handed Stanford its only two losses of the 2009-10 season as the Huskies also defeated the Cardinal by an 80-68 margin on December 23.
UConn will appear on CBS when it plays host to Notre Dame on Saturday, Jan. 8. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in South Bend, Ind. ND enjoyed another outstanding season in 2009-10 as the Irish went 29-6 and were ranked No. 7 in the final AP Poll. The team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 where it fell in overtime to Oklahoma. The Huskies downed ND three times last season and have won the last nine contests.
UConn’s next non-conference contest will be against North Carolina on Monday, January 17. That tilt is set to start at 7 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C. and will be televised on ESPN2. UNC finished the 2009-10 season with a 19-12 record and was seventh in the ACC with a 6-8 mark. The Tar Heels were rated No. 39 in the RPI and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
After three games against BIG EAST competition, UConn will welcome Duke to Gampel Pavilion on Monday, January 31. That game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and is set to tip at 7 p.m. Duke advanced to the Elite Eight last season, finished the year with a 30-6 overall record and won a share of the ACC with a 12-2 mark. The Blue Devils finished the year rated No. 5 in the RPI and were in the top-10 of both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
UConn will appear on CBS College Sports for the only time in 2010-11 when the team travels to Morgantown, W. Va. to square-off against the Mountaineers on Tuesday, February 8. Game time is set for 7 p.m. WVU finished the 2009-10 season with a 29-6 record and was ranked No. 10 in the AP Poll. Two of those six losses came at the hands of the Huskies, including UConn’s 60-32 victory in the BIG EAST Tournament Final. West Virginia advanced to the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies will step out of conference play for the final time of the 2010-11 regular season to square-off against Oklahoma on Monday, February 14 at 7 p.m. at the XL Center. This showdown will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Sooners finished the 2009-10 season with a 27-11 overall record and finished third in the Big 12 at 11-5. OU, which advanced to the Final Four last year, was rated No. 8 in the RPI and finished ranked No. 3 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
