Rich Rodriguez Is Officially Fired; Maybe Dave Brandon Should Be Too

Rich Rodriguez was officially fired today after yesterday’s shenanigans from Fox 2 News in the “Race to End All Races In Breaking the Rich Rodriguez Firing First” (warning, NSFW language) among other subpar Detroit sports news outlets.

(Aside: this is basically how the whole deal went down on the media’s end)

Personally, I think it’s a dumb move to fire a coach this late without an immediate backup plan (don’t say Brady Hoke… just don’t). I won’t even touch on other reasons why Rodriguez might or might not deserve a 4th season for a number of reasons, though mostly because someone will say the words “Michigan Man” and I will be compelled to throw my laptop through a wall… and I just don’t have the money for that. Anyone that follows me on Twitter (a pretty damn good idea, if I do say so myself) would have seen the outrageous names I threw out for Michigan’s next coach because there’s no way in hell I want a guy with a 47-50 record in 8 seasons as a head coach at crap schools taking the biggest* job in the country.

Was Rodriguez a good fit at Michigan? Probably not. His job performance speaks for himself. The Detroit media never gave him the chance he deserved from the outset, but that doesn’t excuse fielding the three worst defenses in Michigan history. Regardless of bare cupboards, no cupboards or whatever your excuse is, the D should have taken a step up this season.

Still, the rest of the coaches currently available make me want to put on tapes of the 1997 season and cry myself to sleep at night. Mr. Dave Brandon, I hope you know what you are doing.
