Brewers to Use Retros Six Times in 2011

The Brewers announced yesterday that they will wear the 1980s Ball-and-Glove uniforms six times in the 2011 season — April 8, May 13, June 10, July 8, August 12, and September 9th. It’s only once a month, but I commented on Twitter that I thought it was about five games too many.

It’s not that I dislike the retro look or want the team to stop using it. My feeling is that they’ve been overused in recent years, and now they’ve actually become boring. It used to be a cool treat to see the current team play in the old uniforms, but when the team used them in every Friday home game a couple years ago, it didn’t seem as special. My personal reaction went from “Wow, those look sharp” to “Oh, it must be Friday. Okay.”

To me, what they did last year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the club was pretty cool — for one night only, throwing other retro looks into the rotation. I loved the 70s look with the plain gold “M” caps. As ugly as the 90s uniforms were, it was still cool to see them, even if they carried a lot of bad memories from that decade.

I can understand why the team does this every year, though. A large portion of the fanbase loves the look because it’s the one they grew up with, and they carry a lot of good memories from the last time the team was this competitive. But I’ve also noticed that there’s also a large outcry from people like me who are almost to the point of being sick of the pinstripes look (but maybe we’re just a very vocal minority). I would rather see the current club play in their own uniforms and build their own memories in them. Who knows, maybe in 20 years people my age will love it when the 2031 Brewers announce they’re wearing the 2011 uniforms six times during the season, and someone else will be sick of them.

Where do you all fall? Do you think the Brewers should use the 80s look more often? Less often? Should they get drop them altogether?
