2011 Tennessee Titans QB Draft Prospect: Colin Kaepernick

We’ll continue our series of articles geared towards possible QB options for the Tennessee Titans in April’s NFL Draft by taking a look at Colin Kaepernick.

Colin’s been a pretty popular guy in NFL Draft conversations as of late. Once considered a solid option for the Tennessee Titans at pick #39, there’s been recent speculation that Kaepernick could be picked at the end of the first round.

If he’s still available in round two, I’d like to see the Titans take a chance on the former Nevada signal-caller.

Why the Titans should draft him

If the Titans are looking for a raw but talented QB prospect who after a year or two of development, could turn into a pretty good signal-caller, than Colin’s their guy.

He has a rare combination of size (6’5″ 233 lbs) athletic ability and a strong throwing arm and unlike another physically gifted QB prospect we recently evaluated (Ryan Mallett) lacks the red flags that could get in the way of him realizing his vast potential.

I love how Kaepernick moves around in the pocket and I’m also extremely impressed with his ability to throw on the run. For the icing on the cake, he’s also viewed as a great leader in the huddle and has the intangibles the Titans are looking for in a franchise QB.

Why the Titans should pass

The only negatives I’ve seen surrounding Kaepernick’s transition from college to the pros is the time it may take to develop his talents. His throwing motion has also scrutinized, but that’s a skill-set that can be developed through hard-work and solid coaching on the NFL level.

Verdict

Kaepernick is the ideal development prospect who could learn his trade while the veteran QB the Titans will acquire through free agency/trade holds down the fort.

However, there’s certainly a chance that due to his impressive pre-draft workouts, Colin may not be available when the Titans are on the clock in the 2nd round.

If he’s still on the board and the team has already passed on a quarterback in the first round, if I’m GM Mike Reinfeldt, Colin’s my guy at pick #39.
