Gamecock Recruiting Nuggets: 05/14/11

Here are some University of South Carolina recruiting updates to help you get through the weekend.  In this Gamecocks Recruiting Nugget we touch on some football news of interest, some basketball updates and a mention of a big “get” for Coach Tanner.

Plus a video of a quarterback that would be nice to see in the garnet and black…

In Football News:

—Clemson joins South Carolina in offering QB Brendan Nosovitch of Allentown, PA a football scholarship.  Does this name ring a bell?

—Former Florida running back Mike Blakely will not be a Gamecock so lose that dream.  Blakely has said he was not released to transfer to another SEC school. Oh well…he is said to have UNC, USF and UCF in his final three.

—Dorman OL Patrick Destefano has set May 23rd as the day he will release his short list.  Let’s keep those fingers crossed that USC is on the list and this press conference is him not saying he wants to be a Clemson Tiger as some think.

—LB Raphael Kirby (6-1 218) of Stone Mountain, GA has USC as one of his favorites but the Florida Gators are top on his list.  Would love to see USC land this kid as he is a great linebacker. Last season, Kirby had 120 tackles with 3 sacks.

—LB Quanzell Lambert (6-2 240) of Erial, NJ counts USC as a offer and is high on them with a promised visit at some point. As a junior, Lambert compiled 112 tackles, 81 solo, forced two fumbles, recovered one, had one interception and three sacks.

—David Hood of Tigernet reports PK Will Roper is transferring from Arizona State and is considering Clemson, USC, LSU and Ole Miss.  Roper is from Hendersonville, NC and I wonder if USC even inquired with him as USC could you a established PK for the future.

—USC has offered both QB Chris Moody (6-1 195) and DL Delvin Tomlinson (6-3 270). The Gamecocks and Tigers have offered both players. Moody’s offers also include Virginia Tech, South Florida, Central Florida, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Indiana, Purdue and Georgia Tech. Moody is being recruited as both a quarterback and an athlete. He runs the spread and the zone read as a quarterback, and is a free safety on defense. Both would be very nice to land.

Here is Moody in action:

—OL DJ Humphries of Charlotte has three of his top five schools in place and is in the process of deciding on the final two. Humphries said Florida, Tennessee and USC are his top three in order right now.

—LSU commit Avery Johnson has an offer from South Carolina and is still considering the school.

—OL Bryce Kennedy (6-3 285) of Southern Pines, NC visited USC this past Thursday.

In Basketball News:

Columbia native 6-8 Jared Guest of Charest Prep School in North Carolina signed Wednesday with VCU. As we wrote earlier, still have no clue why USC did not target this kid.  Our pal Gamecock Man, feels the same.  Horn, how about a answer?

—Speaking of basketball, I hope Horn can land three star Shawn Smith.  He seems to be a good fit for “Horn’s style.”  I would say he is a long shot to land but something to watch.

In Baseball News:

Coach Tanner landed a huge commitment from OF Brian Goodwin (6-1 190) of Miami Dade Junior College. Goodwin is considered the top junior college prospect in the country and a potential first round pick in this summer’s draft. This season he’s batting .367 with 8 home runs and 32 RBIs. Watch to see if he goes in the MLB draft or becomes a Gamecock.  Let’s hope for the later.
