Video: Mayor Kevin Johnson returns to Sacramento

Greeted by fanfare and support, the point-guard-turned-politician comes home after reaching a financing plan to build a new downtown arena.

After three-days of intense negotiations, the mayor of Sacramento accomplished what seemed almost improbable a year ago.

Find a way to build a new arena for the Sacramento region.

Greeted by a crowd of passionate and forever-grateful Sacramento Kings fans, Johnson arrived at Terminal A of Sacramento International Airport late Monday night.  His flight was scheduled to arrive at 11:59 PST, but came in a little earlier than expected.

There’s no place like home.  Sacramento is just such a special community.  And I’ve said it time and time again – if our fans weren’t so good and committed and loyal over a 27-year period, we wouldn’t even be in the game.  The NBA appreciated that and that meant a lot to the Maloofs.  As an NBA player, I had fans meet us at the airport when we knocked off the Lakers in the playoffs.  I never thought those days would happen and to be greeted at midnight by so many people in Sacramento – it’s one special community.
