Arena: Meeting planned between Mayor Johnson, Maloofs, NBA

Kevin Johnson will fly to New York to meet with the Maloofs and NBA to discuss the proposed downtown arena.

Mayor Kevin Johnson is on his way to New York.

According to multiple reports, NBA commissioner David Stern has arranged a meeting between Johnson and the Maloofs. The two sides will apparently meet at an “undisclosed location” tomorrow. The Maloofs today spoke before fellow NBA owners at the league’s annual Board of Governors meetings, expressing their concerns with the proposed arena deal.

Earlier today, more than two dozen Sacramento business leaders sent a letter to the NBA requesting the Maloofs sell controlling interest of the franchise. Greg Hayes, the organizer of the business coalition, says he’s spoken to a prospective buyer interested in purchasing the Kings.

In addition, the city asked the Maloofs to withdraw their request for all phone and email correspondence between Sacramento, NBA and proposed arena operator AEG. From the Sacramento Bee:

In a letter from the city attorney’s office, the Maloofs’ attorneys were told the records request created a “perception that this is an attempt to undermine the good faith efforts of so many people and organizations, including the Kings’ fans.”

The Maloof family filed a seven-page records request, asking for correspondence between the city and the NBA, arena operator AEG, the arena development team and several other groups. City officials said they are still working on their response, but are asking that the Maloofs withdraw their request.

The Kings owners filed that request last week.
