Report: CSKA Moscow in hunt for Lorbek

Yesterday, I wrote a piece explaining how one obstacle that could prevent the San Antonio Spurs from ELsigning Slovenian forward Erazem Lorbek was the condition Lorbek’s agent exclaimed about the Spurs having to wait until July 1 to speak with Lorbek.

Now, the Spurs will not only have that obstacle, but they must compete for Lorbek’s services, as one of the premiere clubs overseas, CSKA Moscow, is now in the hunt to sign Lorbek according to Encestando.es.

According to the report, Ettore Messina whom used to coach CSKA Moscow has been rehired with the team, after spending last season as an assistant coach under Mike Brown of the Los Angeles Lakers. Messina is seeking specific free agents in Europe, and Lorbek is at the top of his list.

This can be a huge obstacle for the Spurs because CSKA Moscow will be able to offer him a more attractive contract, due to the restriction in the NBA where teams must follow specific rookie salary rules.

Lorbek’s agent also said his former club FCB Regal is also still looking to re-acquire his services. What does this mean for the Spurs? The Spurs have to wait until July 1, then take care of their own free agents like Tim Duncan, Boris Diaw, and Danny Green, and possibly Patty Mills (if he opts out), before looking to negotiate with Lorbek.

For Lorbek, it’ll come down to whether or not he’ll want to play for less money to come to the NBA. His agent said the Spurs are an attractive team because they run a European style of offense, but it’s ultimately up to Lorbek if he wants to the trip across the pond at 28 years old.
