WASHINGTON, D.C. – In what may be the worst-kept secret in the NFL, the Washington Redskins will fire head coach Mike Shanahan.

According to the Washington Post and ESPN.com, The Redskins decided to fire Shanahan early Sunday after Washington’s season finale against the New York Giants.

Shanahan, 61, who led the Redskins to an NFC East title in Robert Griffin III’s rookie year, received heavy criticism for leaving him in a playoff game against Seattle—who had suffered a knee injury before facing the Seahawks, which would cause him to suffer a season-ending ACL injury.

Griffin III would come back from off-season surgery, only to struggle.

An off-the-field and frosty relationship with RGIII coupled with failing to live to high expecatations and a 24-39 record—3-13 this year—could prove to be his undoing.

Shanahan is due to make seven million in the final year of his contract with the Redskins.
