NATAL, BRAZIL – According to media reports, the city of Natal, in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte, has declared a state of alert due to excessive rain over the last 36 hours.

The site of the up-coming United States-Ghana 2014 FIFA World Cup opening match in Group G Monday, witnessed excessive rain during Mexico’s 1-0 win in their Group A opener over Cameroon Friday.  Due the steady downpour, mudslides have occurred and the Arena dos Dunas pitch has become saturated to the point of created dangerous and hazardous playing conditions for the Stars and Stripes and Black Stars.

Already in the “Group of Death” this latest setback, puts a serious black eye on the five-time champion host nation, Brazil.

With an already shaky job at hosting the biggest sporting event in the world, Brazil is facing riots, unrest in pavelas, subway worker strikes and now torrential rain and mudslides threatening to jeopardize matches, both FIFA and the Brazilian government need to come up with an immediate solution, if they ever hope to host the World Cup again.

No official word yet—as of press time—what the international governing body of soccer—FIFA, will do in terms of either rescheduled the US-Ghana match at this time.
