Sights & Sounds from Pittsburgh Pirates spring training – split squad

Each day during spring training for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pirates Breakdown will give you game recaps, news updates, and video of player and coach interviews, highlights, and more from the day.

Spring training rolled on for the Pittsburgh Pirates, as they faced off against the Tampa Bay Rays at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, FL. The team sent out an interesting lineup that was a mix of stalwarts and those still fighting for a spot on the 25-man roster.

Here are some brief highlights from the game, which saw the Pirates drop another in a 5-1 loss.

Here are some post-game comments from both Manager Clint Hurdle and starter Francisco Liriano:

The team ultimately lost by a score of 5-1. Andrew McCutchen went 0-for-1 with a walk. Neftali Feliz worked a clean inning, and Francisco Liriano looked strong, though the results may not have shown so. Despite giving up a two-run home run to Desmond Jennings, Liriano struck out three, walked one, and left having giving up five hits in three innings.

The Pirates also sent a “B-Squad” to face the Baltimore Orioles. Details from the game were scarce, but from various tweets by those on the scene, we were able to put some names to the squad:

While clearly a prospect-heavy lineup, it was nevertheless interesting to see how Tyler Glasnow would respond after an inauspicious GL debut. The early returns were encouraging.
