Sights & Sounds from Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Training – off day

Each day during spring training for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pirates Breakdown will give you game recaps, news updates, and video of player and coach interviews, highlights, and more from the day.

The Pirates had their first off day of the spring today, and its the first of just two off days during spring training for the team. The Pirates currently sit at 5-8 in Grapefruit League action, good for 11th in the league. On a positive note, though, the team has won two games in a row, beating the Tigers 9-5 in an offensive showcase, then beating the Red Sox 3-1 in a battle of good pitching. Tomorrow, the Pirates travel to Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida to take on the Baltimore Orioles.

As we stand now, Opening Day is under three weeks away. We know that Francisco Liriano is going to be taking the mound that day for the third consecutive season. We also know that Gerrit Cole is still recovering from rib inflammation, and he would have likely started Opening Day if it weren’t for this minor injury. It’s still unclear whether he’ll miss any regular season starts.

The Pirates also recently had their first cut day, sending down a slew of prospects, including Tyler Glasnow and Jameson Taillon. Another cut day is looming in the near future.

Juan Nicasio takes the mound tomorrow as he facing young gun Kevin Gausman of the Orioles. We’ll all be following Nicasio as he attempts to battle as a wild card for the final spot in the rotation against Jeff Locke and Ryan Vogelsong. We’ll also get to see David Freese make his debut with the Pirates.

As we all wait for game action to resume tomorrow, here are some select tweets from the day to keep you up to date. Enjoy!
