Sights & Sounds from Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Training – waiting for Spring to end

Each day during spring training for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pirates Breakdown will give you game recaps, news updates, and video of player and coach interviews, highlights, and more from the day.

At this point, I’m sure everyone is sick of hearing about how the Pirates lose day after day. But Opening Day is just five days away, and as long as we all keep reminding ourselves of that, the better we will all feel. But yes, the Pirates did lose another spring training game today, this time to the New York Yankees by a 5-4 final. The team now sits at 7-20, good for the bottom of the Grapefruit League.

The Pirates sent down seven more players today before the game, including Rob Scahill and Trey Haley, who each possibly had an outside shot at one of the final bullpen spots. The team also announced that Matt Joyce has locked down on a spot on the Opening Day roster, which was a move that the Pirates had to decide on today, and that Jeff Locke was going to be in the Opening Day rotation. Needless to say, it was a busy day for the team.

In terms of the game, southpaw prospect Stephen Tarpley started and was hit hard, giving up four runs on five hits across three innings. Arquimedes Caminero pitched a scoreless inning, which is a good sign considering he has an ERA of 9.00 this spring. Josh Harrison notched two of the Pirates’ six hits, while Jacob Stallings hit his first home run of the spring. Starling Marte and Jose Osuna also had RBIs. The game ended up being called due to rain.

Tomorrow the Pirates take on the Red Sox at 1:05 PM at McKechnie Field.

Unfortunately we don’t have video available to us today, but, as always, here are some noteworthy tweets from throughout the day. Enjoy!
