UFN Ottawa Prelim Breakout Star: Colby Covington

The Prelim Breakout Star is a once per event article that helps fans get to know those who will be entertaining them from the undercard. The intention of the article is not to bring attention to the most talented guy on the preliminary card, but rather one that the common fan may have overlooked or underestimated.

After a wild UFC 199, we are certainly all ready for more action. With all that craziness in the books, we look forward to another stellar main event. But before we can get to that, let’s check out someone who’ll have you on the edge of your seat before the main card.

What makes him impressive

The most impressive part of Covington’s game has to be his ability to get his opponents to the ground. He’s fought a fairly impressive list of fighters at 170 lbs which now includes Warlley Alves and Mike Pyle. In every single one of his UFC fights, he’s landed at least one takedown. When he fought Mike Pyle, he took the noted grappler down twice. The fight before that with Wagner Silva he hit five before getting a 3rd round finish. Look for him to get some takedowns this weekend and open up with the hands once he gets there.

Why he has been overlooked 

Starting your UFC career with three straight victories does wonders for anybody’s hype. However, there are often bumps in the road to the top and when you run into a hot prospect like Warlley Alves those bumps are huge. A quick guillotine finish put him back a bit, but in the end he’s still just 28 and still has all kinds of promise in this loaded division.

What makes this a good match-up

Jonathan Meunier is a strong 170-pounder. He has a lot of raw athletic ability and a 100% finish rate. However, his flaws fall in two main areas. One is that he doesn’t have very much in the way of name opponents – something Covington has a lot of. Secondly, he has never been in a long fight – his average length is under a round. In the big show, he’s going to have to drag this one out with Covington and when he does it’ll be interesting to see if his cardio can hold up with someone as tough as Covington.
