TSL’s Heisman Trophy Watch 2016: Week 7

Louisville v Clemson

With the height of the 2016 College Football season in play, several players are laying claim to their chance at taking home this year’s Heisman Trophy. Here are our current front-runners for the award.

1. Lamar Jackson / QB / Sophomore / Louisville Cardinals – Jackson had the week off but will face Duke on Saturday. In his last game against Clemson, Jackson threw for 295 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a loss. Nevertheless, Jackson has led Louisville on an improbable run this season and still has them in the conversation to win the ACC.

2. J.T. Barrett / QB / Junior / Ohio State Buckeyes – Barrett had arguably the worst game of his career last week against Indiana, only completing 43 percent of his passes for 93 yards and an interception. However, Barrett got the job done on the ground by running for 137 yards and a touchdown. On the year, Barrett has a 15/3 TD/INT ratio for 981 yards in the air, to go along with 342 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

3. Jake Browning / QB / Sophomore / Washington Huskies – If you weren’t a believer in Browning, you are now, after he completely tore up the Oregon Ducks’ defense for eight total touchdowns including six in the air. Browning has completed 72 percent of his passes on the season for 1,418 yards, while having a perfect 23/2 TD/INT ratio.

4. Jabrill Peppers / LB-RB / Junior / Michigan Wolverines – The two-way star scored two touchdowns from the wildcat position as the Wolverines trumped Rutgers 78-0. On the season, Peppers averages 17.8 yards on punt returns with a touchdown and 31.7 yards on kick returns. On defense, the linebacker has a career-high in tackles for loss with 7.5, halfway through his junior season.

5. Greg Ward Jr. / QB / Senior / Houston Cougars – Ward Jr. was a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy but his candidacy took an enormous hit as he was not able to lead the Cougars past unranked Navy. Despite the loss, the senior quarterback has completed 69 percent of his passes for 1,684 yards, 11 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. Ward Jr. has added six touchdowns on the ground for 272 yards, but faces an uphill battle in his quest to win the Heisman Trophy.
