Badgers’ Rose Lavelle Named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year

Korea DPR v USA: Quarter Final - FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014

It may not have been a banner year for the Wisconsin Badgers women’s soccer program overall, but that wasn’t for a lack of effort from senior midfielder Rose Lavelle.

Her effort was rewarded by the Big Ten on Friday, as the league announced her as the conference Midfielder of the Year and one of three overall midfielders to be named first-team All-Big Ten as well.

It was the second straight season that Lavelle, who has seen time with the United States women’s national team, was named the Midfielder of the Year. She is the first player to earn back-to-back individual position player of the year awards since the inception of the new awards in 2011.

This season, Lavelle finished third in the Big Ten with 66 shots, and during conference play, she tied for fourth in the Big Ten with five goals and tied for sixth with 11 points.

She is a four-time first-team All-Big Ten selection and collected Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 28.

Lavalle wasn’t the only Badger honored by the Big Ten in its postseason awards though.

Goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem was named third-team All-Big Ten, and a pair of freshmen were named to the All-Freshmen team. Forward Dani Rhodes and midfielder Allie Winterfield were the players to earn that honor.

Clem put up 59 saves this season and had eight shutouts on the season to earn her second conference honor of her career.

Rhodes was key to the Badgers attack this season, putting up three goals and earning six points in her first collegiate season.

Winterfield was the only freshman to start in all 19 games this season. She has logged 1,124 minutes so far this year and has recorded 16 shots.

All of that from a team that finished the regular season 8-4-7 overall and 5-2-4 in Big Ten play.

Wisconsin will take on Michigan in a first-round matchup at the Big Ten tournament on Sunday at 3pm CT. The game can be seen as part of your BTN Plus subscription.
