AJ vs HBK May Be Closer Than You Think

It has been a few weeks since AJ Styles got the world buzzing when he posted a picture insinuating a match between him and Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels at January’s Royal Rumble.

When the picture hit Twitter, fans immediately started thinking about the ultimate “what if?” What if The Phenomenal One and The Heartbreak Kid actually met in the ring?

Soon after though, people started realizing that it was nothing more than a dreamajstyles-twitter-ftr-091116jpg_7jumxopij4611bfivfze15wp4 and there was no way this would happen.

…or could it?

When it was announced that the Royal Rumble would be held not just in San Antonio, Texas, but at the Alamo Dome, it was plain to see that WWE would need something big to bring in over 60,000 fans to fill the massive arena.

In 1997, the Rumble was held in the Alamo Dome as well and the show was centered around hometown boy Shawn Michaels. I don’t think that it is too farfetched to think that WWE will use the same method to try and fill the Alamo Dome again.

It wouldn’t exactly be pulling Shawn Michaels off of his couch and throwing him back into the WWE Universe either. Michaels has been in Orlando recently shawnmichaelsnxttriplehworking at the Performance Center with the superstars of NXT. Being around the wrestling environment so much lately may just put HBK back in the spirit.

A match like this though would need more than to “just happen.” Something like this would need more than just Michaels showing up on SmackDown Live one night and say “You know, I’d like to have a match with AJ Styles!”

That begs the question – what could be done to lead into a match/program that could very well give us a Match of the Year candidate a few weeks into 2017?

Whether the writers have planned it this way or not, we may have already seen the start.

It has been weeks now since The Miz gave us one of the best promos of the year when he laid into Daniel Bryan on Talking Smack. Since then, Miz and a few other superstars every now and then have hammered home the fact that Bryan has to feel miserable that he cannot compete in the ring anymore.

If I were booking, then current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Styles would be quick to jump on the Miz’s bandwagon and join in the verbal abuse. Styles’ motivation could be not being happy about being put into a TLC match with Dean Ambrose at TLC on December 4 (whether Styles wins or loses is irrelevant).

I would let this get to a boiling point where Bryan is just about ready to ignore doctors’ orders and get back into the ring. And when he is just about to say thatshawn_michaels_bio he’ll come back, that familiar music hits and out comes The Heartbreak Kid!

Calming Bryan down and advising that his health needs to be his biggest priority, especially with a newborn on the way, Michaels nails Styles with, with all due respect to Randy Orton, a surprise Sweet Chin Music OUTTA NOWHERE!

TLC is December 4 and the Royal Rumble is January 29. That is a LOT of time that SmackDown Live will need to fill between pay per view shows. They will need something that will keep the audience’s attention for that long without having any sort of payout.

Tell me you wouldn’t be patiently crossing that bridge if you knew that Shawn Michaels vs AJ Styles was waiting for you on the other side.
