Starling Marte wins Second Straight Gold Glove Award

The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t have a ton of bright spots in 2016 but one of the was the incredible defense of Starling Marte.

For the second straight season, Pirates’ outfielder Starling Marte has won the Gold Glove Award. Starling Marte won the award in 2015 and continued his stellar defense in 2016. His 17 outfield assists were the best in the NL. Marte was worth 17 defensive runs saved, which was fourth-best in all of Major League Baseball.

There aren’t many arguments against Marte’s defensive skills. His arm is one of the best in the league, coupled with his range and speed, put him in a class of his own. He is elite in both traditional and analytical categories. He is also simply put, just fun to watch play defense. Very few players are must watch defensively and Marte is one of them.

The Pirates have Marte under control for many more seasons. Unless his defense falls off, I doubt this is the last Gold Glove Award for Starling Marte.
