Temple's Matt Rhule named next head coach of Baylor

Coming off of two back-to-back 10-win seasons and an AAC Championship win, Temple Owls head coach Matt Rhule is heading south to become the next head coach of the Baylor Bears.

According to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, Rhule has been hired as the next full time coach to replace Art Biles, who was fired in May amidst a string of sexual assault complaints and violations against the football program. Interim head coach Jim Grobe lead the Bears to a 6-6 record before announcing he will step down following the team’s Cactus Bowl match-up against Boise state.

Since joining the Owls in 2013, Rhule went 28-23 as a head coach, and is largely credited for Temple’s remarkable turnaround from the 2-10 team he took over four years ago.

This past season, Rhule lead the Owls to a 10-3 record and an American Athletic Conference Championship win over Navy.

The 2016 season will not only remain special to Rhule because of the title win, but also because the current seniors on the team, including quarterback Phillip Walker and running back Jahad Thomas, were a part of his first recruiting class as head coach of the school.

Rhule has been a highly regarded coach within Temple’s program, receiving high praise from many of his players over the years.

The AAC title game will have officially served as Rhule’s finale for the school as Temple’s assistant coach Ed Foley will take over coaching duties as the team’s interim head coach for their Military Bowl match-up against Wake Forest.
