NEWS: Josh Bell has left knee surgery, status for Opening Day TBD

In some relatively minor news today, the Pirates announced that first baseman Josh Bell had surgery on his left knee:

It doesn’t seem that Bell will be out long, but this could put his Opening Day status in jeopardy, and he does have a history with this knee. Some tweets of note:

If I were a betting man, I’d say Bell will be ready for Opening Day. If for some reason he’s not and this injury does set him back, the Pirates have David Freese at the ready to play first until Bell returns. The Pirates and Bell were hoping to get Bell as many reps at first base as possible this spring, so this could certainly affect that. Hopefully this knee doesn’t become an issue moving forward in Bell’s career.
