Wrapping up free agency: Defense

Having already discussed LA’s two biggest fish hitting the free-agent market this off season, the remainder of the discussion will be broken down into two installments, with this article focusing on the final two defensive players.

Although several dominoes have yet to fall, making predictions difficult, it’s worth remembering some of the role players who tend to get overlooked.

T.J. McDONALD – SS

The 26-year old California native is due for a pay increase, coming off of his rookie contract.

Although his numbers weren’t staggering, with 64 tackles, two picks and one sack, he still brought a lot of energy to a quality defense.

Whether or not McDonald is a good player to bring back is really up to him. If he can stay out of trouble with the law and increase his productivity under Wade Phillips, then Les Snead would be foolish to not lock him up for another long term deal.

CAM THOMAS – DT

Playing on the fortified defensive line, Thomas is a cheap veteran who stayed healthy and could be a low-key, solid player to resign.

Since the Rams will be focused almost exclusively on overhauling the offensive line and negotiating with bigger name players such as Kenny Britt and Trumaine Johnson, signing Thomas should be stress-free decision.

He only had one sack and 11 tackles, but the Rams shelled out just $760,000 over one year.

Thomas is going into his eighth year in the league at 30-years old, and for a man who stays on the field, it would be hard for Snead to let him go.
