The Rig Roundtable: Playoffs? Playoffs!

The Oilers clinched a playoff spot for the first time in 11 years this week, which made this week’s roundtable question really easy.

Which team do you want to see the Oilers face in the first round of the playoffs and why?

Jon McLeod

The Sharks haven’t been playing well lately, so I’d say the Sharks. But whichever team the Oilers ending up playing, it’s going to be a tough series. I’d also like to see the Flames end up in the second Wildcard spot and have to play Chicago.

The Calgary Flames. You want a sign? One of the beach vendors here in Puerto Vallarta is all decked out in Flames gear.

Calgary even ruins vacations.

Definitely Calgary. They have had a hot team in the new year; but as Woodguy pointed out, much of that great play could be just an illusion, with most of it coming against non-playoff teams.

Considering how the Oilers have matched up with the Flames all year, its hard not to think of that potential matchup and feel inspired. I understand that the Flames are a better team than they were earlier in the year, but McDavid has and will continue to give that defence fits and that could be the deciding factor right there. In net, I don’t buy that Elliot’s above-average play is forever sustainable, and so I have to give the nod to Talbot there as well.
With a significant edge up front, and a probable edge in net, I am confident in the matchup. The only thing I worry about in a prolonged series is Matt Tkachuk pulling something stupid on McDavid. That idea is troubling, and could very well be likely.

Preston Hodgkinson

No matchup will be easy for the Edmonton Oilers, that is for sure.

However, if I were to choose a first round opponent for the Edmonton Oilers, I would choose the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks have been on a sort of a roll of late but I do believe that they possess the least lethal offence out of San Jose and Calgary. Getzlaf, as good as he is, is aging and Perry has lost a step. Their defence is solid but, not as solid as Calgary or San Jose…and their goaltending is kinda questionable.

Oilers vs. Ducks as a first round matchup would be my preference!

Go Oilers Go!

I ran a poll asking this question on Twitter a couple of days ago, with San Jose, Anaheim and Calgary as the options. 60% of you voted that you’d prefer the Oilers match up against the Flames, and I’m inclined to agree.

I can think of an argument for why I’d want Edmonton to face any of those three teams, especially considering the way that San Jose has been playing lately, but my gut leans Calgary.
The Oilers won all four meetings with the Flames this season. I know some people will say that the Flames are a completely different team now, due to a slow start, some early injuries and a recent hot streak, but the Flames have come back down to earth a bit, and so has Brian Elliott’s save percentage in recent games.
Not to mention, I don’t think Calgary has an answer for Connor McDavid, who torched the Flames (pun intended) with seven points in four games.
Now, here’s hoping we don’t win the division only to be faced with Nashville in the first round.
