Your Morning Dump... Where Kyrie wants some of that Hayward/Stevens mojo

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

“When you watch, and you observe and then you have a few days to be on the court with (Hayward), you understand how high his basketball IQ is and the understanding that him and Brad have. They have an unspoken language already between one another, and having that head coach/player relationship, it’s my duty and part of my job to integrate myself in that as well.”

The first day back at Waltham and things are shaping up about as we expected. Brad and Gordon apparently have telepathic powers, and Kyrie wants in on the action.

Seriously, even though it’s been seven years since Hayward and Stevens were last coach and player, they had three solid years together before that; it’s not surprising, then, that Hayward has kind of an inside track on Stevens’ communication style, especially as seen by a guy like Kyrie Irving. I mean, I’ve got jars of pickles that have been in my fridge longer than Kyrie’s been a Celtic.

A lot longer.

OK, I should probably throw them out, but my point still stands. Kyrie hasn’t been a Celtic for very long.

I don’t expect a 2007-ish stampede out of the gates by this Celtics team, but I’m gradually coming around on them. Between Stevens’ cerebral approach to coaching and these guys’ versatility, there’s kind of a fun vibe brewing altogether different from the chip-on-the-shoulder-wanna-make-something-of-it? character of last season’s team.

Finally: Look for the Union Label

Jaylen Brown, VW van owner, drive-by dunkster, and all-around Renaissance man will apparently be the Celtics’ union rep this season. Good for him.

Jaylen and Kyrie, a couple of one-and-doners, ought to have plenty of time this season for those late night bull sessions that most college students don’t get around to until their second or third years–caffeine (or other substance) fueled debates about just what exactly Bob Dylan meant by “the pumps don’t work ’cause the vandals broke the handles” and the like.

Oh and the Union Label in the headline? I’m afraid I’m showing my age just a titch with that, although I was too young for the SNL spoof.
