Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call: Early Season Off Days are Killing the Vibe

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

More Baseball, please?

Yesterday the Pittsburgh Pirates followed up their exciting Opening Day win with a day of rest. It has been tricky to get into a rhythm so far this season as the Pirates have had rainouts and the usual early season off days. However, tonight the team returns to action once again against the Minnesota Twins at 6:05 pm.

I don’t know about all of you but I have really disliked the pace to the start of this season. Obviously, the Pirates can’t control the weather but it’s been difficult to get into the start of the season because baseball is best when you get that beautiful daily game. I know that once the weather warms up, we’ll get back to normal but right now, I am just disliking off days.

The pace of play is the current hot-button issue for Major League Baseball. However, the weather has absolutely destroyed the pace of play of the schedule. Major League Baseball can’t plan for weather but starting a season in late March is generally asking for trouble on the east coast.

Super Nova

Ivan Nova will make his home debut as he takes on Jake Odorizzi. Nova pitched fairly well on Opening Day in Detroit as he went five innings, allowed two runs on four hits, but walked three. He pitched out of a couple huge jams but definitely didn’t have his best stuff.

Ivan Nova is key if the Pirates want to sustain their early season success. Nova is the veteran arm at the top of the rotation and he needs to give the team quality innings. I don’t expect he will pitch as well as he did at the beginning of last season but if he can consistently give the team six innings and limit the damage, I will be very pleased with his season.

The Pirates have a rotation mostly filled with young pitchers, so having a veteran at the top is something the team really needs. Young pitchers will have growing pains and moments of inconsistency, so Ivan Nova needs to be a stabilizing force in the rotation.
