Right Field: Mookie Betts, Boston Red Sox

2018 fWAR: 10.4

Just about everything went right for Mookie Betts en route to another Red Sox World Series title. He nearly doubled his fWAR from 2017 with what he did this past season, and it’s not as if his 5.3-win performance was anything worth scoffing at. That’s just how good he was.

Betts made a slight shift in approach while not making a huge overall change. His 35.6% swing rate was basically identical to what he did the year before (36.0%), but the situations in which he swung the bat shifted. His chase rate went from 22.1% to 19.8% and his swing rate on strikes went up from 53.8% to 57.0%.

If there’s one stat that proves how dominant Betts was in what could very well be an AL MVP campaign, it’s this: when was faced with an 0-2 count, he slashed .293/.352/.586, which led to a 148 wRC+.
