Break Glass In Case Of Aroldis Chapman

MLB: Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox

Chris Russo would love what the Mets did on Monday.

You see, the only way he evaluates players is “what does he do in a big spot?”. The way Rajai Davis showed himself in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, Mad Dog would probably have 13 Rajai Davises on his team any day of the week.

His team would probably go 75-87, hence no big spots for any of the Davises.

But to have one Rajai Davis isn’t a bad thing, and the Mets will find that out as they have signed him to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, and will give him every opportunity to make the roster. The Mets really haven’t had a versatile outfielder on the roster since Eric Young Jr., and Davis is probably a slightly (at least) better version of EY Jr. As a 4th/5th outfielder, he’ll provide more off the bench then a lot of the bench did in 2018, so he’ll be useful.

Also, if the Mets reach the World Series and Aroldis Chapman is waiting for them, Mickey Callaway can always deploy Davis to do this …

If the Mets go out and sign a big time center fielder (or trade for a mystery option), then Davis might actually get this chance.
