Daniel Bryan On His Former WWE Character: ‘I Felt Trapped’

Daniel Bryan is continuing on his mission to cultivate his new heel character in WWE. The latest effort in that mission is a video that was recently released on the company’s YouTube channel.

In the video, The “New” Daniel Bryan talks about his former babyface character. It’s the same character that WWE fans fell in love with, the one that brought them to their feet as part of the “Yes” movement.

“I felt a little trapped when I came back. I had this new idea for a style that I wanted to wrestle. But when you come back at WrestleMania, I kept having people tell me ‘oh, people want to make sure that you’re okay and that you’re healthy. They wanna see you do all the old stuff, they wanna see you do all the dropkicks in the corner and the dives through the ropes’ and all this kinda stuff. And it felt like a trap.”

This may come as a surprise to many WWE fans, who believed that it was indeed Daniel Bryan himself that wanted to work his old style upon returning to the company. But evidently, Daniel believed he was stuck in one certain way of doing things and wanted nothing more than to do something different.

“After a while, when doing the dropkicks in the corner start to wear thin and you no longer want to dive through the ropes, then it feels like a trap. And so now, winning the WWE Championship, getting rid of the old? It feels like liberation.”

Daniel is obviously in character during the YouTube video. But he has indeed reinvented himself for the masses in WWE. His new persona has elevated him to the top and that’s especially true because of his new run as WWE champion.

Daniel recently defended his title against Styles at TLC and Bryan came out on top. While it’s unknown how long Daniel will continue on this run, it’s clear that he’s just getting started and it’s also clear that the new persona is definitely working for him.
