Packers rumors suggest Josh McDaniels emerging as favorite to become head coach

NFL: New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills

The Green Bay Packers players sent a clear message to management regarding how they felt about interim head coach Joe Philbin returning to lead the team next season in Sunday’s embarrassing 31-0 loss to the Dolphins at Lambeau Field.

There were a number of plays on which the Packers players put forth little to no effort, like this fake-field goal attempt, which resulted in a touchdown, and really helped set the tone in the Lions’ blowout victory.

As such, it’s highly unlikely that Philbin will be given the head coaching job in the future, which isn’t a surprise, given his past failures in Miami. So, if that’s the case, then who will end up getting the job?

Well, it appears that the favorite from the getgo remains exactly that, and the team may be moving in on their man — Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

The Packers are slated to interview him in the very near future as well.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky replied to that tweet and confirmed that McDaniels is indeed “high” on the Packers’ list.

Given the head coaches that will be available this offseason, McDaniels does appear to be one of the top candidates. The Packers will be looking for a creative offensive mind to pair with Aaron Rodgers, and McDaniels is certainly that. And he does have some head coaching experience, although his tenure with the Broncos was a failure. But the time he’s spent as coordinator may be exactly what he needed, as he prepares for a second attempt at head coach.
